Let’s celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month - What Is It? When Is It Happening In The UK?
Every June, streets across the world erupt in color. Flags wave high, people march proudly, and communities come together to celebrate LGBTQIA+ identities. But beyond the parades and parties, Pride Month is rooted in something deeper: resistance, resilience, and the ongoing fight for equality.
Origins of LGBTQ+ Pride, the Stonewall Riots
Pride Month marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, a series of demonstrations that changed the course of LGBTQ+ history. From June 28 to July 3, 1969, the queer community in New York City rose up in response to a violent police raid at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village.

At the time, laws criminalized same-sex relationships and gatherings. Police routinely raided LGBTQ+ spaces, targeting individuals simply for existing. But in the early hours of June 28, the community had had enough. They fought back.
That resistance ignited a movement.
Within months, activist groups like the Gay Liberation Front and the Gay Activists Alliance were formed, demanding visibility, rights, and justice. And in June 1970, the very first Pride march took place in New York—an act of courage and defiance that would inspire generations to come.
Honoring Marsha P. Johnson & Slyvia Rivera
Among the key figures at Stonewall was Marsha P. Johnson, a Black transgender woman and fearless trans rights advocate. Alongside her friend Sylvia Rivera, a Puerto Rican trans woman and activist, she co-founded STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries), an organization dedicated to supporting homeless LGBTQ+ youth—many of whom had been cast out by their families.
Their legacy is foundational to the modern Pride movement. It's because of their bravery—and the courage of countless others—that we celebrate today.
